Here are a few events to look forward to during the month of October.
Barrio Party
Oct. 1 – The Poole College of Management will be celebrating the presence of the Latin American community with food trucks, academic programs and performances. The event will take place from 11:30 am – 2:00 pm outside of Nelson Hall.
The Poet X Book Club
Oct. 3 – The Women’s Center and Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) will host a Latinx Heritage Month inspired book club. The club will be centered around The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo. Meetings will take place on Tuesdays from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
Black Graduate Student Association
Oct. 4 – The Black Graduate Student Association will be having a general body meeting from 3:30 – 5 pm in Witherspoon 356.
Navigating the Coming Out Process
Oct. 7 – This Student Lounge Workshop will discuss the challenges and complexities of identity to help students become comfortable with their own identities. This will take place from 2:00 – 3:00 pm at the GLBT Center.
Searching Our First Lady’s Garden
Oct. 9 – OIED will be hosting an event about the social, political, and historical significance of Michelle Obama’s White House Kitchen Garden. The event will be held in the Witherspoon Gallery from 11:00 am – 1:30 pm.
National Coming Out Day
Oct. 11 – National Coming Out Day is an annual event to promote awareness for the LGBT community and to destigmatize the coming out process for members within the community.
Mi Familia General Body Meeting
Oct. 14 – NC State’s Mi Familia will be holding their first general body meeting of the year in partnership with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. The event will be held in Talley Student Union room 4101 at 7:00 pm.
Latinx History Month Keynote Address
Oct. 15 – The mental health collective, Bloom Homie, will be discussing the realities of being a young Latino in the United States. The event will take place in the Talley Piedmont Mountains Ballroom at 6:00 pm.
Hip-Hop Project Meeting
Oct. 16 – The Hip-Hop project is a club on campus looking to bring together musicians to create songs, visual art, and generally promote Hip-Hop culture. The event will take place in Witherspoon 356.
The Traveling Mixtape Series Presents Money Matters
Oct. 17 – MSA will be hosting a discussion on budget overhauls for students to provide them with better financial security. This event will be held in the MSA suite in Talley from 12:00 – 1:00 pm.
Love Your Body Day Summit
Oct. 18 – The Women’s Center will be hosting workshops all day with off-campus partners in celebration of national Love Your Body Day. The events will last from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm in various on-campus locations.
AfroPack
Oct. 19 – The African American Cultural Center will be hosting the annual AfroPack community event. AfroPack is a day-long event of activities that celebrate black art and black joy. Events will take place at both the African American Cultural Center and Harris Field.
State of Exposure: Take Better Photos
Oct. 22 – Learn how to take better photos on any device. Then use your newly learned skills on a photo walk. The event will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Digital Media Lab at the D.H. Hill Library.
2nd Empanada Extravaganza
Oct. 27: An all out empanada extravaganza that will feature six food trucks and will take place in Durham’s Central Park. The event will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Lunch & Learn A Panel Discussion On Social Justice And Community: Family Separation, Ice Raids, & Detention Centers
Oct. 28- A panel of professionals and student leaders will come together to discuss issues facing the immigrant community. The event will take place in Caldwell Lounge from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Food will be provided.
