This is a new news (with a splash of opinion) series that Nubian has started to make the news more digestible. It can be very overwhelming opening CNN, ABD, or NY Times and seeing an overflow of news at once. So every week we will present 5 things that happened this week that you may not have known (and should know).
India
On Sunday, February 7th, a huge part of a Himalayan glacier fell into a river sending a massive avalanche of water, dust and rocks down a mountain gorge, and crashing through a dam in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand. At least 171 people are missing and 26 have died, including 35 workers who are believed to be trapped inside a tunnel at the larger, state-owned hydroelectric project. Five confirm the glacier fell from a remote and inaccessible 5,600m (18,372ft) peak called Raunthi. This incident caught India’s government by surprise as there was a lack of sufficient data about Raunthi. Raunthi is one of 55,000 glaciers across the Himalayas Hindu Kush range, which ranges from India, Nepal and Myanmar to Afghanistan and Pakistan that are not monitored. Surprisingly there are only 24 glaciers that are being monitored. How about we get on that cause wtf!
Stimmy!!!
On Monday, February 8th, House Democrats unveiled a bill that would give millions of families at least $3,000 per child age 6 to 17 and $3,600 per child under the age of six. The money would be sent in monthly payments of $300 for each child younger than 6 and $250 for each child aged 6 to 17 over the next year. These benefits will be available to single parents earning up to $75,000 annually and for couples earning up to $150,000. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Child Tax Credit would become fully refundable for the year. Also some news for college kids above age 18 who are still claimed as dependents …..we still don’t get sh*t. Can you believe there are about 13.5 million adult dependents in the US with the majority of dependents being students, 54 percent?
Hackers
On Tuesday, February 9th, it was reported by the United Nations that North Korea stole hundreds of millions of dollars, more than 3o0 million, in 2020 to fund its nuclear and ballistic missile programs between 2019 and November 2020. This comes less than a month after it was reported through Google that a North Korean government hacking group used multiple profiles on various social networks, such as Twitter and LinkedIn, to reach out to security researchers using fake personas. They are really working overtime over there like d*mn take a break, PLEASE! According to CNN these reports also alleged that “one unnamed country assessed that it is “highly likely” North Korea could mount a nuclear device to a ballistic missile of any range, but it was still unclear if those missiles could successfully reenter the Earth’s atmosphere.” These reports are currently confidential and were received by CNN through a diplomatic source at the United Nations Security Council, who was willing to share as long as they were kept anonymous.
Chappelle’s Show
On Wednesday, February 10th, it was announced by Dave Chappelle through an instagram post that the Chappelle Show would be returning to Netflix on Friday. “I asked you to stop watching the show and thank God almighty for you, you did. You made that show worthless because without your eyes, it’s nothing,” Chappelle said to the audience. “And when you stopped watching it, they called me. And I got my name back and I got my license back and I got my show back and they paid me millions of dollars. Thank you very much.” Netflix began streaming the Chappelle’s Show on November 1st but pulled it on November 24th at Chappelle’s request. Chappelle made the request after stating that he wouldn’t receive royalties for the show based on a contract he signed with Comedy Central and its parent company, ViacomCBS and that the show had been licensed without his consent. Let’s clap it up for a Black man fighting the system and winning. We love to see it!
Deserted Island
On Thursday, February 11th, the U.S Coast Guard rescued three cuban nationals, two men and a woman, who had been stuck on a desert Bahaman island for 33 days. 33 F*CKING DAYSSS!!! Lt. Justin Dougherty told CNN affiliate WPLG, “It was incredible. I don’t know how they did it. I was amazed they were in as good a shape as they were.” The three individuals lived off of coconuts, conch shells and rats after their boat capsized in rough waters 5 weeks ago and they swam to the island. What is even more amazing is that the U.S just happened to find them on a routine air patrol around Anguilla Cay, a chain of islands between the Florida Keys and Cuba. What a one in a million chance!
