On Tuesday, April 8, UNC-Chapel Hill’s University Media Relations confirmed to The Daily Tar Heel that “The visas of six international students have been terminated by the federal government.”
The reasons behind the visa terminations have not been revealed, but is an indication that the Trump administration’s policies regarding immigration are hit closer to home — and much more severely in this instance. The developing article also states that the UNC-CH is not aware of the presence of ICE on campus.
This news comes amidst widespread visa terminations across the nation, specifically in the UNC System. On Monday, The Chronicle at Duke University reported that the visas of two graduate students and an alumnus were revoked, and last week the federal government terminated the visas of two international students at NC State.
There appears to be a lack of communication between the federal government and these educational institutions, with NC State University releasing a statement confirming this. “NC State did not initiate these terminations and was not directly notified of the changes. We are deeply concerned about the lack of communication from federal agencies and the impact of these actions on our international students,” the statement reads.
This is a developing story.
