A Louisiana judge ruled that Columbia student activist Mahmoud Khalil, a legal resident of the United States, can now be deported.
Assistant Chief Immigration Judge Jamee Comens made her decision on April 11. The trial lasted two hours and reviewed evidence obtained from the federal government on April 9, which included a memo from Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This memo says that Khalil’s “‘beliefs, statements or associations’ would compromise US foreign policy interests.”
Khalil, an active participant in protests on campus, was arrested in front of his pregnant wife outside of his apartment at Columbia University on March 8. He has been very outspoken against Israel’s actions against the Palestinians and Hamas.
Khalil’s attorneys have said they plan to appeal the deportation and file a motion to see the supporting evidence for Rubio’s claims against Khalil.
This is a developing story.
