President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename the Department of Defense to the Department of War on Sept. 5.
“I think it’s a much more appropriate name, especially in light of where the world is right now,” Trump said. “We have the strongest military in the world.”
The order approves the Department of War as a secondary title for the Department of Defense, and allows department officials to use related secondary titles such as Secretary of War.
Trump would need Congressional approval to change the department’s name. After signing the order, he said he would ask Congress to legalize the name change, but then suggested that “I’m not sure they have to.”
Pentagon officials have started to change signage outside of offices to signal the name change. The old website of the Department of Defense has been updated to say the Department of War. The old acronym for the Department of Defense (DOD) is being replaced with DOW for the Department of War.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a statement saying it’s “not just about renaming, it’s about restoring.” He said the military will “go on offense, not just on defense” and, reflected in the name change, the country will “raise up warriors, not just defenders.”
This is a developing story.
