14 Former NC State student-athletes filed a lawsuit against Robert Murphy, a former NC State Medical Director, who allegedly sexually abused and harassed them..
The lawsuit initially began Aug. 2022, when former NC State soccer player Benjamin Locke filed a federal lawsuit and said that Murphy inappropriately touched him and others.
Locke said, “I want him held accountable, and I want the university completely held accountable for what they failed to do.”
Since then, NC State athletes from 2012-2022 have come forward to press further charges against Locke. Some athletes said he had touched athletes’ genitals, massaged uncomfortably close to their genital area, or harassed them while acquiring urine for drug tests.
The lawsuit defendants include Locke, former Chancellor Randy Woodson, NC State University itself and Deborah Yow. Murphy was fired from his position as Athletic Medical Director in 2022 but was never suspended from his occupation. Yow, former athletics director oversaw the department from Murphy’s hire in 2011 to her retirement in 2019. She had received information about Murphy’s allegations since they first arose, but never took action to stop him.
Attorney Seth Blum, representing Murphy, said there is not “one scrap of credible evidence he assaulted anyone.”
