Student Senate will decide whether or not it will pass Resolution 68, the Inclusion Act on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm in the Senate Chambers, 4th floor of Talley Student Union. The meeting is open to the public.
At the senator’s first meeting of the Spring semester the bill was not fast tracked and sent to committee because it didn’t garner enough of their support. Read “Not Swayed: Students plan to push SGA to pass Inclusion Act .” The bill requests structural support of minorities in response to events in locations such as Ferguson and existing structural inequalities.
Student leaders representing several multicultural groups have organized in efforts to get the bill passed because bills related to underrepresented students such as College of Sciences Senator Karli Moores’s proposed bill, the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration Act was sent to committee in October, and has been there since. In the wake of Student Senate’s denial to pass the Inclusion Act last week it has undergone a revision and proponents of the bill plan to speak directly to senators during Wednesday’s meeting.
Students and supporters of the bill will meet at 7 pm outside of the Senate chambers to discuss the 7:30 pm meeting’s agenda and its speakers. Student Government Director of Diversity Outreach Maurita Harris, a senior studying senior studying psychology will be there to connect with students coming to support the passing of the bill.
