At 10:24, the Student Senate goes into a voting period to remove GRO Chair Tan Francis. The vote failed with 0 yes, 52 no and 6 abstentions.

Lalith Nandula, meeting chair, announced the meeting was entering closed session, meaning members of the public and media in attendance would be required to leave. However, Technician Editor-in-Chief Skye Crawford said that entering a closed session requires a simple majority vote. After consulting Student Government Advisor Emily Saylor, Senate determined a simple majority vote would be required to enter closed session. The vote failed, and members of the public and media were allowed to stay.

Din said that Chair Francis did not adequately disclose that her intent to step down from her position was caused by academic and work priorities. Francis said she had communicated prior to stepping down, when she sent an email on Oct. 28, two days before her stepping down. Din then said the issue was Francis’ lack of communication with her Vice Chair Preston Spencer.

Senator Kaleb Garcia said that Din had BCCed Spencer in an email between Din and Francis about removal, but not Chair of Chairs, President Pro Tempore Dewberry. Furthermore, Din said she is the final say concerning the Chairs, as she appointed them. Senator Lamiyah Joyner expressed concern towards Din not CCing Dewberry when contacting Francis, saying that it was a constitutional responsibility of the Pro Tempore.

Chair of the Board of Elections Joseph Attanucci’s Report consisted of a speech highlighting Student Senate’s “dysfunction”. He also resented the raised fees for Student Senate.

“The political theatre has to stop,” he said.

He encouraged the Student Senate to look inward at the “chaos” happening and ask themselves: “When students look at student government right now, what do they see?” He elaborated to say that what’s happening from an outside perspective does not look like leadership: “It simply looks like dysfunction. We’ve passed more than 100 pieces of legislation this session. That sounds impressive until you look closer. A huge share of this work has been inward facing, appointment confirmations, restructuring ourselves, revising our own processes. This is necessary, but it’s not transformational.”

“And then, unbelievably, in the middle of all of this, we voted to raise the fees students pay for this very organization. We struggled to deliver visible results, We spend weeks fighting internally, and our answer was to charge students more.”

He stressed that they have been using “escalation for effect, conflict treated as proof of righteousness, performative outrage, replacing actual governance.”

“If we cannot withstand disagreement without collapsing into chaos, then we are not equipped to govern, not her and certainly not anywhere beyond this room … If every conflict becomes a moral emergency, then nothing meaningful ever gets done.”

“It makes us simply unserious.”

He said that effective change doesn’t happen “because people grandstand it or burn down their house to feel hurt.

Din utilized her report to address The Nubian Message’s article about her alleged creation of an uncomfortable and hostile work environment. She encouraged senators to come and talk to her. She promoted her ‘open door’ and the senator’s ability to schedule a meeting with her.

Technician Editor-in-Chief Skye Crawford asked, “How do you ensure your senators feel comfortable bringing concerns, issues, etc. to you?”

Din said that her office doors are always open and she has open office hours. She also said that senators can email her, and she responds pretty quickly.

“I try to be positive as much as I can be. I have some good days. I have some bad days. Past few days have been pretty bad days.”

She shared that everyone needs to feel comfortable coming to talk to her about legislation, organizations or other issues.

The Nubian Message Editor-in-Chief Nevaeh Sturdivant asked, “You referred to your coworkers’ claims about your leadership and a hostile work environment you created as ‘misinformation.’ By this are you actively denying the accounts of your colleagues?”

Din refused to comment in public.

A student asked, “How is the student senate holding you accountable?”

Din said that her All Chair Council, led by Pro Tempore Taquan Dewberry, held her accountable.

Regarding Din claiming no one confronted her about an uncomfortable work environment, Sturdivant asked, “Beck Whitehead, through the help of proxies, has expressed grievances. What would you say to him if he was here?”

Din refused to comment.

During Open Floor Comments from the student body, Beck Whitehead spoke through a non-student government proxy and argued to keep Chair Francis. Senator Preston Spencer recounts when Din left him unsupported in his responsibilities as a former student senator.
