Justin Gainey, current University of Tennessee associate head coach and a former NC State men’s basketball player, is coming back as the next head coach.
Gainey was one of the final options for the position of head coach after Will Wade dumped NC State.
Tennessee’s Men’s Basketball head coach, Rick Barnes, said of Gainey, “I hope he gets the job. I don’t think there’s anybody in the country who loves NC State more than Justin Gainey; he’s a North Carolina native. He went to NC State, played four years there, and started four years. Helped win an ACC tournament.”
Gainey began as an assistant coach at Elon and worked his way through Appalachian State, Santa Clara, Arizona, Marquette and Tennessee before returning to his alma mater.
Gainey was officially hired on Mar. 31.
